Any idea why login works differently in CoalBlack than default theme?  Should be using the same login scripts.

Found it.  CoalBlack does not have the cookielength select menu in the header login.  If I add it to your index.template.php, the problem goes away.  The form handler requires the cookielength parameter to complete the registration.  Why it only affects IE is anybody's guess.

Glad you figured it .. not a big deal really ..

Should be easy enough to hardcode the "Forever" option into a hidden input.  Session length is a stupid option, anyway.

Like it or not, IE is still the major browser, so if it doesn't work in IE, it doesn't work.

Seriously, if IE9 works like IE should have worked since IE6, then it would be a good thing.  For too long, Microsoft has had this misconceived notion that every other browser should work the way that IE works and that is just plain wrong.  Too many companies still believe that IE is the browser that all others should aspire to.  The primary reason for this is that if it's built into Windows, it's got to be the best thing since sliced cheese.  Unfortunately, we have all been conditioned over the years to actually believe Microsoft's crap.  Speaking just from the point of view of Forum software, everybody who has a Forum should tell their users that if they are using IE, they should sometimes expect things to not work the way they would expect.  There are just too many browsers out there today that are so much better than IE, there is no excuse for single users to not try something else, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari, etc.  All are better than IE.  I have quick link buttons on my desktop to all of these.  IE is there as well, but I hardly ever use it unless I have to test something.

When I started working with the web in 1994-95, the first thing I did was to get a paid copy at that time of Netscape, ( Mozilla ) and stayed with them until Firefox came out. Not just because of the Browser but the Editor that came with Netscape, you could browse and make webpages, in those days that was way cool. So never the less, I got interested in HTML and Started to learn and bought a few HTML editors and with Netscape started the learning process.

One very important thing, I work on PC and Laptops daily and IE is the number one ( in my opinion) contributor to Crap building up on the system than any other, I've experienced and everyone's computer I have ever worked on. (bugs, viruses,Trojans, spyware) every PC I repair, I put Firefox on it and direct the owner to please use it, rather than !E.
To be honest I could care less if anything works on that browser, and if was ever made. And I mention on other sites that IE 9 is moving in the right direct and toward the CSS3 and HTML5, but before that not so much. And if you are using Windows XP and want the world to stop 4 you, then you must be older than me and that real old!

On the other hand MS has made some very good software and I use them, but the browser sorry no like!

Now moving on to newer and better things>>> Go CSS3 and HTML5 <<< don't look back >>>!!!

More to the point, regardless of which browser you prefer (and it's strictly a matter of personal preference), as a developer you must accommodate all of the widely used browsers, or your product will not be acceptable to clients/customers.  IE still holds a large part of the market, and your code must work in it, or it's not fit for production websites.
